Pure parental joy to watch your kid meet challenges and rally in spirit.

The first thing that came to mind after finishing this gem of an essay is "Grit," a NY Times bestseller by Angela Duckworth. I read it not too long ago, in my early 60s, hoping to perhaps internalize this so-very-important quality in my life (better late than never).

My point: Your boy is learning about grit. Maybe it's already in his DNA, but the "nurture" part of the equation is being developed, thanks to you and your hubby, at such a young age. George may or may not keep surfing, but letting him do this – fall down, shiver, get saltwater driven up his nose – is giving him a gift for life. (Also, surfing is a LOT of fun!)
