Transparent Tuesdays
Issue 117
You guys,
What would an alcohol-free vacation look like?
Sam and I pondered this question while drunk on our fourth glass of wine during a mini family beach weekend getaway.
During our 2-night stay at Wrightsville Beach, Sam and I sat on the balcony overlooking the ocean, drinking wine while our babies slept. We had great conversations and enjoyed the quality time.
But I never feel good after a trip. I feel tired, bloated, and anxious because I’m behind on work and there’s too much to do. With two little kids, I’m probably not going to feel refreshed and rested after a trip for quite some time, but if there was no drinking involved I would at the very least sleep better and come home feeling the same as I did when I left.
Sam and I were giddy thinking about the possibilities. As usual, I set my sights low (I could read two books!) while Sam dreamed up a 3-week vacation in Costa Rica (We could learn Spanish!).
Either way, it was easy to imagine a wine-less vacation with just me, Sam, George, and Layla. But if we were with family?? No chance. Hanging out with family requires drinking. Not only because it’s the culture of both our families but because Sam and I couldn’t hang around them for too long without needing a drink.
Yes I realize this is a problem on many levels and one we should address. At some point.
In the meantime, I’d love to know what you optimize for on vacation and how you feel when you get home. Also, do you drink more or less when you’re with family?
A Twitter Thread
Last week I shared my essay on the benefits of writing under a pseudonym.
Yesterday I turned that essay into a thread:

Bleecker Bombs
Episode 11 is out! My college roommate and her husband were our first guests on the podcast!
In case you’re wondering, I did not reveal to them my pseudonym. They know my first name is Charlie and my husband’s name is Sam, but that’s it.
Listen to the episode on Spotify, overcast.fm, Google Podcasts, or Apple Podcasts.
