Love it. This piece is relatable to both sides of the political canyon. I’m sure so many out there can’t help but stay silent and keep their thoughts within.

Also – that Theo Von episode was funny. The mullet and the blazer did it for me

Thanks for your comment, Claire.

…I only listened to the episode so I had no idea about the mullet and blazer lol.

Ah, such a great piece. The only possible way forward is finding what you and your friend found, a way to actually listen to each other. I have one pal I hike with often, and we disagree about plenty of things, but he never takes it personally, which makes me feel the same way toward him. It's far too rare. I'm so glad you wrote this.

Thank you, Rob! Sounds like a great friendship you have.

I'm going to credit the hiking for the peaceful disagreement. Walking/hiking does good things to the brain (and the heart.)

100%. I have a friend who's a therapist who often hikes with clients. She believes maybe the left/right action mimics EMDR, and helps to process things. On top of that, though, the pal I hike with is just a particularly opinionated but loving human, and has a very generous sense of humor about everything, which helps as much as anything else. I'm always happy to follow his lead.

I always know I'm going to get real life from you and this one was like standing next to you while you had these conversations.

Ah I didn't get the thumbnail until the very end. Well done as always. You captured perfectly the humanity beneath the zeitgeist.

This is a conversation that not enough of us are having (because it's uncomfortable and because Sam is right, friends shouldn't make you feel this way).

I live in San Francisco. From day to day conversations (spanning from intimate friends to my landlord and to the receptionist at my favorite yoga studio) it feels fair to assume that 100% of people voted for Kamala. Bashing Trump voters and writing them off as dumb, ignorant, racist, etc is a normal part of polite conversation.

And yet, almost 20% of voters here voted for Trump. I'm sure most of them laugh along with their friends and landlords and yoga teachers, too.

I have so many friends losing their minds over this election.

I understand conviction. But mind share to point where it drives out everything else? People willing to sacrifice friendships and relationships for the news?

I'm taking my dog for an evening walk and looking at the stars.
